There's not much you can do except prepare yourself for the unexpected. My Mom experienced sudden onset dementia as a result (we think) of a stroke. She was 92 at the time. My wife and I were abroad in Spain when it happened ... an e-mail from a concerned friend tipped us off. The nurse where she was living noticed a dramatic change in behavior and sent her to Emergency for evaluation. We came home to find Mom in the geropsychiatric center of our local hospital ... she had completely flipped out and was under medication that kept her partially sedated but was not a long term solution (atypical antipsychotics never are for dementia). In the end, after returning to the GS unit a couple more times, we had to place her in a memory care residence. It was the most expensive alternative but it gave her some daily routine, a chance to meet some new friends and we think it really made a difference in her total health. She passed away on Christmas day 2012, she was 95.
