"This stuff is going to be some form of phorphoric acid gell."
What led you to that false conclusion? It's a non-toxic water based liquid, non acidic. Kind of hard to be farther off from an acid gel. From what I can tell, it's essentially the same product as Evaporust, and it works by a process of chelation. Quite honestly, the stuff is amazing. If you immerse the rust part long enough, the rust quite literally disappears into the solution. There are three caveats: 1 You have to be able to immerse the part. For very light rust you can do a surface application using a soaked paper towel and cling wrap, but if it's that light you don't really need a rust remover. 2 Immersion time, in my experience, is quite a bit longer than they claim. Even moderately thick rust that you pre-grind as much as possible will need to soak several days. 3 It saturates sooner than claimed, so it's not a cheap way of removing rust. It is, at least to my knowledge, the only way to effectively remove or even treat hard-to-access rust.
