In NYC you could go see the federal reserve bank... right downtown. They have limited scheduled tours, but you can see it goes down 5 stories and has gold. Empire State building and ground zero/reflecting pools would be something else also.
Chicago you can do the loop and ride the LRT around. The Navy pier on the waterfront. Crate & Barrel's hometown if your wife wants something for the house.
Cannot say anything about Yellowstone as I haven't been there.
North Platte Nebraska has a great truck stop with good food and showers.
Montana has the "Going to the sun" road if you want to make a detour. It really is quite amazing. Check to make sure the road is open.
Alcatraz, the streetcar museum, Lombard Street (I don't think you can drive down it any more) would be a couple of SF suggestions. Also the German U-boat and the Q (Liberty) ship by Ghiradelli Square are cool. You get to wander by yourselves.
17 mile drive ( you have to pay now) outside Pebble Beach. The Monterey Bay Aquarium. Skip Cannery Row, it's s tourist trap and nothing like Steinbeck described. Highway 1 through Big Sur is a scenic twisty drive in the daytime. Do not buy gas in Big Sur, it makes the Socal prices look like bargains. Also hope you don't get stuck behind an RV and a trail of cars.
A tour through Santa Barbara on the Land Shark. It's a big ass amphibibus so the tour is on both land and you go out from the marina area around the pier and back to the starting point. It's about $25 per person I think.
Again Highway 1 from Oxnard south, takes you all the way down. You can also cut across to the 101 through Topanga Canyon or Malibu Canyon if you want.
That's a few ideas for you anyway!
Mark :-)
