Badlands SD, drive through AM and later after noon, changes a lot with lighting during the day, probably too hot mid day. There are interesting cabin to stay in near NE entrance. Minute man missile museum near by - ask.

Custer state park SD, drive the needles highway etc and cave of the winds, drive from there on local roads north to interstate, spectacular. Stop at mining museum at town of Lead.

Devils tower, 2 hour side trip NE of black hills area, enter via a loop from east of there on back roads, perfect. Walk around the tower, takes 45 - 60 minutes while you enjoy and photograph, not just the tower, major rock formations that you walk through.

Then stay at Buffalo WY, go to the old hotel's Virginian Restaurant [fav of Wild Bill Cody]. Grand old B&B north of there, "Mansion House Inn"

Drive trough sand hills of SD exit from I90 going NE towards Badlands SD. Keep gas tank full!

Monument Park and others south Utah. Grand Canyon one day south of there. The "North Point" is less of a mob scene than the south. But remote in terms of getting in there. Forget getting lodging in the old park lodges, but ask, they keep a few rooms open and there are cancellations.

South from Buffalo WY then west into Tetons is a very good drive, have picnic supplies. Have paper road atlas and watch for scenic routes.
