If a hydraulic floor jack is failing there is a safety risk.

Years ago I had a hydraulic floor jack that completely collapsed while I was under the car; I found out after I slid out from underneath the car held up only by the jack stand. Now, my religion about using a jack stand is stronger than ever. The jack gave no warning that it was slowly collapsing, but it had collapsed completely while I was under the car.

Whether you are using a failing jack or one that appears to be perfectly good, use of a jack stand is advised.
