I'm coming in late, but... 1) though the 2000 era other GM vehicles may have had floor level lighting, they did not have SAHRs. I would not consider floor level lighting at all innovative or even useful. SAHRs otoh was groundbreaking and virtually every company copies this now. Saab beat Volvo to that. Something that reduces injuries in collisions is waaay more important imho than a cosmetic gimmick.
2) I don't think the Buicks really would appeal to that many Saab folks here, any more than the NG9-5 appealed to Saab folks here (if it had, Saab would have raked in the $$$ in the VM years selling them like hotcakes and been still in business today). The reason the NG9-5 failed is it is a value proposition on a *large* *sedan*. What most saab fans want is a hatchback or at least a wagon. Completely the wrong product. Is the Buick available as a wagon?
GM never got it.
That said, I do get the appeal of the Verano if one is looking for a turbo in the GM line with some Saab dna (but missing a whole heck of a lot of saab dna also)... but it's a value proposition sedan... not quite the same as an SPG or 9k Aero was! The Buick is a viable alternative for those who bought into Saab as a value proposition for euro sedans (as GM positioned the brand).
3) To compare the Verano to the OG 9-5 is kind of unfair in that there is a decade and a half of progress that happened in that time... why not compare the Verano to a c900? obviously there should be improvements! But there are real downsides to most modern cars as well, so depends what one is looking for... I am glad you like the Verano, and it does seem like quite a good value. It is nice to see more turbos on the market! Too bad people didn't buy into that back when Saab was around!
