I wouldn't pay much attention to anecdotal reports from the general public blaming their detector for getting a ticket. In looking at some real world tests on the internet it seemed to me that Passport and Valentine pretty much battle to a draw as best detector. I chose the Passport as the cost was less though sometimes I would like to have the directional indicators the Valentine has- not sure that feature would actually save me a ticket though over the 8500.
I've often been amazed at the sensitivity of the 8500- on typical interstate overpasses where cops wait on the downhill side it will alert before the cop car is even visible. I don't use it around town as I don't speed in urban/suburban streets so I don't know much about that kind of driving detector performance though.
As someone said- with laser you just better hope your alert was from when the cop shot the guys speed in front of you- otherwise your caught.
I also saw that Passport has a little add-on box so you can add the GPS features to an older 8500.
