When the fuel pump or DI dies you're stuck. But fuel pumps fail on any car, usually at pretty high miles. A dead alternator or PS pump can strand you. Plenty of cars now have something similar to a DI. And even Saab DIs have gotten better over the years. Silly little stuff can fail on any car, a hose dies, a belt breaks. And neglected or deferred maintenance can bite anyone in the butt.
In 29 years of owning Saabs, I don't think they are any better or worse than other European cars. Japanese cars are probably better than average, but stuff still breaks and wears out. Domestics have the advantage that when they break down they can usually be fixed almost anyplace.
