Anders,
What you say makes sense. It is unfortunate. Many good overall things about Saab design. Wish they would have had a dose of Japanese obsession about components. I suspect components really let the company down relative to other makers, and led to high rate of stranding, which is bad grass roots marketing.
I remember going to a Saab showroom in the late 1990s. They spoke of a "1000" improvements having been made to the new model. It made me think a) either they were lying and b) was the car that bad before? It reminds me of associates who run around with long to-do lists, but never get done the core projects. Perhaps Saab design teams suffered from that. Per Anders Tunberg's book on the 9-5 development, the small size of the design team for each area meant the personality of the team leader really was reflected in the end design, for better of worst.
With only 2 models, and long life for each model, seems like they would have had plenty of time to actually be a leader in component reliability.
