In your case someone probably just hit it by accident.
In 18 years in a semi-rural area I've replaced only 1 mailbox, although both have been whacked by bored and stupid punks wielding baseball bats.
A snow plow did some damage one year, but didn't kill the box. So the driver made sure he took it out the next winter.
Some people do install them so they are close to impregnable, but it seems like a lot of work to protect a $25 box. Others hang them off a chain so they swing away if hit. You see some weird stuff.
Funny story:
Before we moved here some kids were out one night bashing boxes as they drove around A kid hit one box and actually broke his bat on it. And that left a clue. He had burned his initials into the bat and the cops were able to track down the little twerp and made him pay for damages and do some community service. Hah!
