I think from the other response and ours you can surmise that your rights become limited.
The worse custom officials were always the younger ones somewhat new to the job and trained to be hard a**ed, they will stare at your documents for a while, glance at you then stare again at your docs before allowing you to cross the border.
After a night of drinking in the 70s I rode my motorcycle from Canada back to the states around 11 pm and waking up the next day had no other recollection of the ride home save for the 1st 10 minutes leaving the cottage in Canada. Not sure how I managed to get thru customs that night or even make it home.
