We used to have a Krups, which burned out after a couple years, then a couple of Cuisinarts, which also burned out. Was about to buy yet another one of these plug-in jobs until I stumbled upon the Chemex - which is just a big tempered glass carafe and some paper filters. NO plastic to flavor the coffee, & easily cleaned.
We found that the water coming in contact with plastic tubing not only changes the coffee's flavor, but inevitably results in the tubing (internal & inaccessible) building up mineral deposits. All the plastic parts where the hot coffee makes contact eventually become more or less permanently stained/"becrudded" by old coffee.
The Chemex makes the best TASTING coffee, IMHO. Total cost: About $30 for the Chemex, $10 for 100 filters, which go into our compost pile after use. Only drawback is that a human has to boil water in a kettle and pour it through the Chemex, which consumes about 4 minutes of your time.
