The upgrade to Windows 8.1 is free, but you will have to hunt a bit to find it in the Windows Update area (hint: to get there click on the "gear" charm). Windows 8.1 adds back a lot of the functionality of the "Start" menu that we have become used to over the last couple of decades. Your wife will probably not be as frustrated using her computer after this upgrade.
I recently set up a couple of new Windows 8 machines that I was forced to buy, primarily because the new release of our main design program is not compatible with XP - and it was time to upgrade. At first I also found it frustrating, annoying and painful to deal with - and it would not load certain programs due to the "Path too Long" error. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, it immediately loaded the previously unloadable programs; after using it for a few days I am a lot less annoyed with it than I was initially, and can almost see some of the logic of the design.
If this is their best effort at being relevant, my guess is that MSFT will be out of business soon enough. My kid uses Google Docs for most collaborative school work - I have to wonder how many copies of Microsoft Office ($$$) will be purchased by anyone used to using these equivalent free programs.
