My difficulty is that plain text does not work for me. A large percentage of what I do involves, tables, graphs, and mathematical expressions. That stuff does not usually translate well, and if one is to work collaboratively on a document, PDF is not much use, since it is effectively read only.
I've also used word processors long prior to Micro$oft dominance. I don't really have a problem with office, but I do find it frustrating when they release a new version that has incompatibilities that requires everyone to upgrade. Sure it's "just part of life" but word processors are old news now - word had every feature I needed by about 1996. Most changes since then have been minor in terms of capability, more significant in terms of UI... which imho is irrelevant.
