For whatever reason, I get really excited about energy efficiency. I bought a tankless water heater a couple years ago and virtually disappeared my gas bill entirely. It went from $30-$40/mo in the summer (our heat is also gas :( ) to $4-$6. The unit's EPA sticker shows a range of like $55-$205 annually for water heaters, and this one is $38 or something like that.
A few months ago I made a list of all the lights we use frequently and replaced them all with LEDs. I never got in on the CFLs (I don't like the light, I don't like the fragility, and they don't fit well into the waste stream) but spending $200 on LEDs made good sense. I think that knocked about $10-$15 off our bill - it almost pays for charging the Fiat.
Two years ago I replaced our washer & dryer with the most efficient units that Maytag makes, and ended up saving both electricity and water, so that felt particularly good.
Next up is the refrigerator - and the only thing that's holding me back from a purchase is the new standards. I know my current frige runs way more often that it could - it loses cold *and* (gains heat?) isn't terribly efficient when it runs. A new one should address both concerns.
Don't get me wrong, throwing thing away simply for the sake of new - even efficient new - doesn't sit particularly well with me... but if there is a defensible reason (like a leaky water heater or refrigerator) to warrant a replacement, I think it's very worthwhile to go as efficient as you reasonably can.
