It is all tradeoffs... Nuclear can be very safe and clean. The high power density is an asset there, but also the concern for many. Otoh, wind farms and solar are not very power dense, so it takes a lot of area to produce sufficient energy. This is probably not unlike the hydro-electric power vs nuclear tradeoffs. Hydro-electric dams do affect the landscape, and the debate is then "which concern is worse?"...
In the end, any large scale power distribution affects the environment (at least cosmetically) because we have to run power lines all over the place. The more we can reduce grid dependence (solar cells on roofs etc), the better imho. As it stands, a good ice storm or other issue can take out a whole whack of the grid, even in areas that shouldn't be that affected. Loss of power can cripple business as most of us are so dependent on power to work!
FWIW, I've surfed just off from the nuclear plant near San Clemente. Never bothered me! Now the runoff you guys get down there after a rain storm... woah, that's not so good! If I had to wait 3-5 days after a storm to surf back east, well, I'd never get out (it rains every other day!)...
