You'd have to read the thru the various reports but the firings came after a 300 page report done by a GM contracted person was published - it showed no evidence of a cover up but a whole series of incidents where various individuals knew of the problem but failed to act. The engineer who made the change to the switch in 2006 after reports of crashes I think claimed he forgot to follow the process. But the original design was flawed and didn't meet GMs own spec - Delphi pointed out this in 2001 and nothing was done because of cost.
GM sales don't appear to be impacted by all of this - but yes the firings are meant to show that GM is serious about making changes.
I think though they have significant exposure from victims - most were young. GM is trying to settle out of court because if these cases go to a jury I think GM will face some huge payments.
