The NHTSA is such a weird organization I can't even begin to guess at what they're involvement is/was. I remember in the Toyota Unintended Acceleration cases there was all sorts of evidence that NHTSA had been made aware of "a" problem repeatedly but took no action. It was implied there were back-room deals with Toyota about causes and/or fixes, but then that whole tangent disappeared - possibly because the issue wasn't an issue in the first place. Or was it?

It's hard to name one modern governmental organization that isn't partially or completely in corporate America's pocket, either by looking away or actively endorsing shady activity. Whether it's vehicular safety, net neutrality, or drug safety it seems us citizens are continually victimized - and directly victimized - by "protection organizations" who are less into protecting and more into profiteering.

I'm probably biased, but it seems that this is where personal injury lawyers are probably the last useful bastion of actual consumer protection. Sure, they're a shady bunch, but at least they're clear about their motivation. I figure if folks are getting paid to let corporate America mistreat Americans so effectively, then why not let a bunch of lawyers get paid to take that money right back out of the system. Maybe eventually it'll reach the point where coverups are just bad business. (And, clearly, we're not there yet.)

Bah - I guess that's a part of why I like old cars. At least I know all the myriad of ways my c900 might betray me and have come to terms with them. ;)
