Well I'm in Maine and have been doing century or longer rides for many years. Did one a couple weeks ago, have another (on dirt roads) next weekend. Most experienced riders I know would not consider a 100 mile ride "advanced," much less "expert." Doesn't take any particular skill or even a high level of fitness, mostly just a willingness to be on the bike a long time.

As to the wheel, I think you'd be OK replacing the spoke and checking the tension on the other spokes, and riding. If so, you may or may not have another similar problem. I don't think respoking would be unreasonable, but it it were me (I will replace spokes and true, but I don't build wheels), with a wheel that old I'd take it into the bike shop so that people who actually know what they're doing could advise. I am fortunate to have a bike shop I trust completely.

I haven't broken a spoke in over 20 years, even though I am 195 lbs and ride a lot. Wheels are a lot better than they used to be. I think the last time I carried spare spokes was on a tour in 1975.
