I had the worst experience in my life with a contractor from Sears about 5 years ago. I bought a new water heater and contracted with Sears to install it. I was at work the day they came, but my wife was at home for them. In brief, I contracted for a water hear installation for something like $100, but it ended up costing me over three times a much. The installer said the exhaust pipe had to be changed from a 3 inch to a 4 inch pipe for current code, and he wanted $260 to do it. Claimed it was extra work not in the contract. I was livid at being ripped off for 15 minutes of work (5 feet of pipe with 2 elbows), but agreed since we had been without hot water for a couple of days. I subsequently filed a complaint with Sears customer service, and they dismissed it. I researched the contractor and it turned out he had 11 unresolved complaints with the local BBB for his company. I filed another BBB complaint, this one against Sears rather than the contractor. Sears refused to do anything. I pointed that they were responsible for quality control of their contractors, and that they never should have allowed a ripoff artist like this one in my home to represent their company. It made no difference, and my BBB compliant against Sears was never closed. I tell this story whenever I can and now use Sears only as a last resort. This to me is a perfect example of why Sears is struggling.
