Re: winter tire compounds Posted by Dave the Ice Age Knave [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: winter tire compounds, TML ![]() ![]() |
I recently decided to replace my winter tires which I had bought used. Over 10 yrs old at the time of purchase but with about 7/32nds of tread I was wary. They (dunlop or Pirelli - can't recall) were surprisingly good on snow and ice considering age and being of old tech. Must have been something to do with German quality (at the time of mfer) since they were not crazed or dried-out looking and felt resilient/pliable at low temps, even after 12 yrs.
Anyway, after looking at the latest and greatest news/tests on premium, winter touring-type tires, I selected Bridgestone's new (July 2014 release) WS80. The scanty internet-based info seems to indicate a considerable increase in capability and a substantial leapfrog over the previous "leader" Michelin Xi3. I don't care if the advanced tread compound is done after 60% wear since I won't use winter tires with less than 5/32 remaining anyway for safety reasons and I vaguely recall the WS80 is 1/32 deeper than the Xi3 to begin with. I am not ignoring Hakka or Nok but considering price and although on thin ice, I am boldly going forward with an assumption that the WS80 will be in the top 20% once the dust settles and all the test results, sorry snow and ice settle and the new round of global tests are publicized.
