In Hakkas... since about Hakka5, I thought they came pre-studded with retractable "eco" studs to do less damage to pavement. Here we are not allowed studs at all (stupid) and so to get hakka 7, they come with no studs at all. Presumably one could still order a tire and put in more normal studs, but better to go with the better setup from the manufacturer? Which tire has better snow clearing (and tread depth?) 7 or 8? That would be what I would use to make my choice. Hakkas are much less open than they used to be - presumably a noise/fuel economy thing.
We had a set of Nokia Hakka10's with the old permanent studs in our 1989 c900 in a non-stud banned locale... those tires still tore up ice at 10 years old and worked way better "used up" than the brand new top of the line unstudded hakkas we had on the other c900! I have never driven a better winter tire for ice and snow (but pretty miserable on bare pavement - road noise, flexy sidewalls, etc).
