This is obviously not the place to get into an in-depth discussion of these topics, however having said that, the way towards energy independence is to develop the massive resources we have available in North America. As far as "record profits" are concerned it is the job of any business (oil company or otherwise) to make profits.
I'm happy you like your Volt, but the "thanks" offered ring pretty hollow. From my perspective it really is no different than being thanked for being robbed at gunpoint by common street thugs who then used some of the proceeds to help make your purchase more affordable.
That's all I have to say on the matter.
