For TVs it was between 6 and 1 years ago, when plasmas were being sold at much lower prices than LCDs and with much better image quality. 3 years ago I got a 50" Panasonic at half the price of a high end LCD and it still beats the current LCDs at picture quality...

I'd guess that in 2-5 years OLED production will have matured enough that you can buy a good quality 60" 2160p OLED TV for <$1000. That's when it'll be the best time to switch from 1080p TVs. Higher resolution than 2160p doesn't make sense at screen sizes less than 100", so it'll be a long time until 2160p/4k/Ultra-HD is replaced...
