The reason plasma is dead is part ignorance of the buying public and partly because the industry has better margins on LCDs and TV salesmen push LCDs...
Interestingly, you'll see high end second hand plasmas being sold at higher prices than they sold at from new...
Even with gimmicks like "local dimming", LCDs don't get near plasmas in image quality. They still don't have as good black levels or color but just as importantly, no matter what you do LCDs will always have motion blur. It's just a result of the way LCDs work.
Bottom line is that for those who care about the image quality, plasma has only just recently been superseded by OLED. LCD, in spite of all the buzz word gimmicks like "local dimming" etc have never been close. It's also quite funny to see how people who own much more expensive LCDs react when they see how good even cheap plasmas look. Some immediately go out and replace their LCDs, others get cranky because they spent more and got less.
As for your linked TV - the Panasonic 2160p AX900 - even Panasonic themselves admits that it doesn't have as good an image as their last reference plasma, the now almost 2 year old 1080p ZT60...
And finally, like I wrote previously: you can't tell the difference between 2160p (4k) and 1080p with normal viewing distances on anything less than ~60". Just like you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on less than ~40". Only if you are up close to the screen can you tell that the resolution is higher... See the link for further explanation.
