I actually think the newer BMW GT's don't look too bad. There was a crazy thread over on other cars which had good comments on the BMW GT's from Tim. See link. A friend here (with BMW leanings) noted some downsides of the 3 series GT but that the 4 series GT was very nice. Something to consider. Of course price is not lower for 4 series! ha!
I like wagons, but I also really like how the 9000 hatch looks and works. It's a great car and very hard to replace. The closest things of 9000 shape I can think of are Tesla S, Panamera, 4 series GT, maybe the audi hatch, though those look kind of large and yet not very hauly. The 9-5 will be a natural fit for a 9000 driver if they are ok with a wagon or sedan. If shopping used, and a SAAB enthusiast with a reasonable SAAB support structure (indy/diy/etc), I would definitely consider the 9-5.
Why not keep the 9000? Rust?
