There are many options for coding BMWs. Depending on software you use, some setting may be inaccessible but it is possible to access all settings given appropriate software. Software is available for free or at nominal cost (under $100.)
Certain functions, such as map updates require VIN-specific codes. These codes can be obtained on eBay at nominal cost. In fact, it is possible to buy lifetime map update codes (about $150.) I prefer using my factory navigation and to keep it up to date because of the head-up-display. It is extremely helpful in an unfamiliar area.
You may need a device to program your key. These are available on eBay at nominal cost.
With classic front engine rear wheel drive layout BMWs are typically not very roomy. Even large models are pretty tight compared to the equivalent front wheel drive layout cars such as Audis. My E60 550i is an outstanding long-distance cruiser, however rear leg room is dismal. It is only slightly roomier than my E46 325i. GT models are much better in this respect, especially the 5er GT.
