OT: AT&T thieves. How to get out of the service? Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Sun, 11 Jan 2015 13:55:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I got internet service with ATT. It's called Uverse. It's something like 30 bucks a month.
When I signed up, they promised me as a new customer that the 99 dollar charge for the modem would be waived and that they'd send me $50 in the mail. I had to call in later, argue with them on two separate occasions about these since I got neither and wasted a couple hours of my time. After much fighting, I got 50, then another 50 on another call and finally the 50 in the mail. At some point a "higher quality" customer service rep from LA called me who was *really* nice to me. It was a big fight.
Then there was an intermittent issue and they sent out a tech without warning me of any costs. The month after, 99 bucks on my account. More arguing, more time wasted, finally got my money back. Again, lots of fighting, being put on hold and being hung up on. Yep!
I've been with them for a mere 4 months and I despise them and their business practices. I moved to another place where internet is already included in the price....
So, I found out about their "vacation hold" online (which did not work when I did it). Called them, they tried to charge me 10 per month to put it on hold even though it's 5 on their website. Anyway, it's on hold now.
I basically want to get out of this whole mess and want nothing to do with them. So, I looked online fearing that I entered into a 1 year contract (no one ever told me about this when I signed up...) and I'm pretty sure I'm in one (although, again, no one told me so I'm making the assumption). It says there *may* be an early termination fee of $180.
Now, I want to cancel but I obviously don't want to feed them free cash and I imagine they won't be so willing to do something about it given that I'm cancelling (so they can get their last little bit of money from me).
What if I continue with this "vacation hold" at 5 bucks per month until the year passes and then cancel? Will those months contribute to my year contract?
What else can I do? Any experiences? This whole mess has become a nightmare to deal with.
Thanks for any tips on this. Hoping I can maneuver my way out of hell.
