Do you need to idle the engine for a while after starting in cold weather? Lots of people seem to think you need to let the engine warm up for several minutes before driving off. Even some auto mechanics recommend this.
I believe it's better to get the car in gear and drive immediately (with moderate acceleration). The engine warms up more quickly under load, thereby getting the catalytic converter hot and reducing emissions. And a warm engine burns less gas. At least that's what my Saab owner's manuals have always instructed. Maybe other brands have different recommendations.
What's the true story?
