That sounds like bad design or maybe unexpected use rather than a bad technology. The point of these designs as dtech suggested was that you keep your key on you - why would your wife bring a key, only to then leave it in the the car? Did the ES350 not have remote start? That seems like a feature that goes hand-in-hand with this technology. Many implementations of this technology use a rechargeable battery in the fob and provide a place to periodically charge it in the car. If Toyota left this out knowing you'd have to change batteries frequently, that seems like a design oversight. I dunno. Seems like you're upset at Toyota's execution rather than the concept.
