"Why is that so important?"
The control software that runs the engine was probably designed as a "finite state machine" (also known as a "state machine"). Obviously, the engineers who did this either did not foresee the need for coasting into a parking space or wanted to discourage this behavior.
I have used this technique in a previous career; if used, you also need to have some fault management software to clean things up when the control process gets into a funky state that you hadn't dreamed could possibly occur. I'm still not buying the excuse of floor mats causing uncontrolled acceleration in certain vehicles.
