A rite of passage for my son.

My son called me from the west coast this afternoon "Hey Dad, I'm
waiting for triple-A in the middle of nowhere Nevada." His $2000
clunker with 350k on it had given out in halfway through his
spring break camping trip.
About an hour later he called again, really upset "It's pretty bad, looks
like the engine is shot, I.. I.. Just don't know what to do". We talked
for quite a while. He'd worked pretty hard to save the money for the
car, and now it looked like that was the end of the line. There wasn't
much I could say beyond "yup, been there a couple of times, most of them
with Mom, and it truly sucks", and "have something to eat, find a place for
you and your buddies to sleep, and figure out what to do in the
morning."
I'm not very worried -- he's a pretty level-headed guy, as are his friends.
He's got a charge card I gave him for emergencies, and the better part
of a week to get back to school before classes start again. He'll
manage.
Still, it's hard not to feel his pain. I think most of us remember
that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you hear or
feel something going dreadfully wrong with the car you're depending
on to get you home.
Ok, my wife says pictures are up on Facebook. I guess that means
everything is going to turn out all right.
