Maybe miraculously, I've never been there. Not when I drove my 15 year old 1979 Mercury Cougar all over California or when I drove a 20 year old fresh-from-a-field 1980 900T up to Oregon, or even when I decided it would be a good idea to buy a '67 Cadillac sight unseen from Colorado Springs, CO and drive it home.
BUT, my dad has stories. Stories about ending up stranded in the early '70s in the Midwest with a brand new Alfa Romeo or hanging backwards off a freeway onramp in his Porsche, or running out of gas near Bakersfield before there even was an I5.
I'm probably the crazy one in the family, but I take road trips seriously. I am *definitely* getting there and I've always been equipped with the knowledge or tools (even if that tool is a cell phone!) to get the show back on the road.
The fact that your son could call you - or anyone - from Middle of Nowhere, NV shows just how bad it isn't. He's head and shoulders better off than being stuck in Texas in 1972 with a broken down Yoooorapean fruity car, y'know? :)
