Late August 1972.
I'm four days out of the Navy and have just crossed Nevada at night in my '68 VW Bug. Heading home to New England. About 7:30 AM I'm running east on I-80 west of Salt Lake City when the #3 exhaust valve takes a deep dive into the piston. Fortunately near an exit and and a pay phone, I got a tow to the VW store in SLC. A couple days later I had a rebuilt engine in the car and resumed the trip. $300-400, as I recall. Had the cash wired to me from my parents. The dealer didn't do a very good job and I wound up replacing the engine a couple years later, but it all is, as you note, a rite of passage when one is running older cars.
I keep waiting for one of my daughters to call with some end-of-the-road adventure, but hopefully their Saabs will hold up a while longer.
