OT: Life expectancy of compact spare tires? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 7 Jun 2015 09:38:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have three Saabs ranging in age from 2000 to 2008, all with the factory original compact spares. I also have a set of four 16-inch SE wheels mounted with 2009 Michelin tires, three of which have 8/32s or more of tread depth.
I see four options for these rims:
1) Sell the spare rims as is.
2) Keep the rims and use for snow tires on the wife's car. She only has a 3-4 mile work commute to the local school and doesn't even drive on the crappiest winter days when classes are cancelled. She is not convinced she needs snow tires.
3) Sell the rim with the most worn tire (5/32s) and keep the other three as full size spares. Assuming they will fit in all three tire wells. This will put 6-1/2 year old tires into potential duty as spares, not much of an improvement for two of our cars.
4) Sell the rims and buy new spare tires, definitely for the 2000 at least.
How long do these temporary spares last? In 40+ years of driving I have only had to change one tire due to a blow-out, and that was February of 2014 when I ruptured a Gislaved snow on a deep roadway crater.
TireRack sells new temporary spares for $80 to $100 each. As a very likely low volume sales item, TireRack's new spare tires may be a couple years old. As I am typing this, option #4 with purchase of one or two new spare tires (2000 and 2006 vehicles) is making the most sense.
