Your broader point is valid but, in my particular case, I've bought all my cars 'new' since I arrived in California in 1980.
I bought a 'demo' VW Rabbit L in 1980 in Rhode Island after graduating from college (should've coughed up the extra $30/month for the Scirocco!) and it had spent one winter in RI. Started to rust out in LA.
The only other new car that was exposed to salt was the '87 Scirocco 16V I picked up on tourist delivery over Christmas '87. Drove around Bavaria, through Austria, northern Italy, over to Paris, Brussels, and then to Duesseldorf. Lots of snow and may have been exposed to salt but no rust occurred in 143K miles of driving in California.
In any event, if I buy 'used' in the future, I'll be sure to check its pedigree.
