Wow, I had no idea that a quart per 1000 miles was still the rule of thumb being used. (That dates back to the 1960s, at least.)
My '97 9000 with about 327K miles on it uses a little over 1/2 quart between 5000-mile changes. That's with Mobil-1 10W40 "High Mileage" oil. Judging by what I see under the car it's mostly been leaking/seeping out for years. (I see that as part of the engine's British bloodline and it helps retard rust on the front underbody!)
