That's normal or even better than normal when you are talking 2000 and up cars.
I add about 1.5 q at the 5K mark in my wife's car to get it to 10K changes and it has 130K now using Total 5W-40.
BMW came out with a bulletin a year or so ago saying that roughly 1q per 1000 miles is ok, so you would not have a case if your almost brand new BMW used less oil than that.
