I understand your point and agree... sort of.
My first Saab was a 1972 and it was fuel injected. My 9000 has a darn similar engine, with few other goodies that would affect emissions like EGR or VVT, although it does of course have a cat. And I'd be interested to see real-world numbers but I'm sure it produces considerably fewer emissions than the '72, and even after adjusting for turbo vs. lack thereof and displacement I'm sure it produces more power.
I think with the whole emissions vs. power and drivability (and other convenience factors) there's definitely a point of diminishing returns and possibly an absolute limit. But I don't think we're there yet - manufacturers keep coming up with creative ways to improve both sides of the coin at the same time. And I think they can continue to do that at least for the foreseeable future.
