We go between Chicago and DC fairly often. Lately we've been splitting the drive over two days. I find the Pennsylvania turnpike to be a pretty tiring drive. A lot of trucks, a lot of hills, a lot of curves. Once in Ohio it gets easier. Chicago traffic is indeed hideous. I'd stop somewhere
several hours outside of Chicago, and get a big midwestern breakfast and an
early start leaving a huge margin to get to Midway on time. Hotels seem
more plentiful in Ohio. The state rest areas have big boards listing
distances and hotels and phone numbers so you can line something up a
couple of hours ahead of stopping.
Indiana traffic moves along at a pretty good clip.
