I'd attempt the trip in one day. Leave NJ very early AM and take your time getting there and try to hit Chicago around 8 PM. Sleep in the next morning, go to Midway, and then head to Ames. If that sounds bad, try to make it as far as South Bend the first day. It's less than 2 hrs to Chicago from there.
