Hello SAAB Folks.
As a long time SAAB driver, I am about to sell my 2008 95 Aero. It’s been a great car and works perfectly but it is time for a change. Incidentally – keep your eyes on the classified board for this great car soon (Silver in NC).
One of the cars I am considering is a TDI Audi A6. A turbo diesel V6, this car has plenty of power but still manages to produce very good gas mileage. The EPA rates the A6 TDI at 24/38/29 mpg city/highway/combined. The alternative I am looking at is the A6 Gasoline V6 (let’s just say not as good at the pump).
The only experience I have with a diesel is from the 80s and would really appreciate any experiences or insights from a trusted group of car folks.
I really don’t have a clue here:
Are diesels more/less reliable?
More/less costly to own in the long-run?
Do diesel engines tend to last longer (when maintained properly)?
Compared to Premium gas, diesel is currently less expensive but that doesn’t always seem to be the case. Why is that?
I know VW (Audi’s owner) had problems with certification of their diesels and those problems extended to Porsche and Audi. How does this really effect the car owner?
I would appreciate any feedback on newer Audi cars such as, reliability, cost of ownership, maintenance, whatever. I asking this board because I know most of us like cars, like to drive and appreciate great design.
Thank you.
