Agree -- easiest way to figure out if you like it is to try one. See if you can rent one for a week as an extended trial.
A couple of years ago, we rented a BMW X5 (diesel) in Ireland for around 10 days. Drove from Dublin to Shannon via the north and west with a mix of city, scenic byway, some dual carriageway. Fair amount of sheep and cyclist-dodging.
As KW says, it was different. Aside from getting used to the 'wrong-side' of the road, the car just felt different. I don't mean the size, handling (not that different than my wife's terrain, albeit the X5 felt much more cramped for the driver), but the pedal feel. In general it was fine. Didn't experience the stink too much, except when refueling.
One thing that was disconcerting (and they didn't tell me about it at Hertz) was the auto shut-off and restart. As I pulled out of the rental driveway, waiting for a spot to move into traffic, the engine just stopped, yet a tug on the steering wheel, or taking a foot off the brake, it started back up. Freaked me out the first couple of times, driving through Dublin rush-hour traffic!
