A few thoughts:
I would look at this first from a purely economic standpoint. Put on your accountant’s hat and run the numbers. Consider initial cost, maintenance, fuel cost per mile, and possibly resale value. Each time I have looked at this, unless you do a LOT of miles the fuel costs in the US for gas vs diesel just don’t let the diesel win.
Everybody rejoiced when Chrysler introduced the first half ton diesel pickup in the US. From what I hear though at nearly a $5K premium over the gas engine, the break even point is way past 100K miles and the sales numbers are well short of expectations.
As far as lasting longer or being more reliable, I suspect there is no simple answer. Plenty of gas engines today can hit 250K miles or more with no major issues. Consider that the modern diesels are very complex beasts. I believe VW has had there share of injector pump problems and DEF system difficulties. So, while the basic engine may be very stout, the stuff around it is likely no better or worse than a gas engine.
The other thing that puts me off a little bit is the smaller pool of knowledge here in the US for diesel cars. Yeah, it’s cool to be different but the number of mechanics skilled in working on these is dramatically smaller than that for an equivalent gas vehicle.
Overall in Europe where diesel is cheaper relative to gas and the ecosystem to support them is better it probably makes sense. Here, I don’t think so.
