Are the cabinets made out of cherry, or some other wood and then stained "cherry colour"? Noting also that cherry itself is often stained in kitchen cabs...

The reason I ask... cherry changes colour with exposure to sunlight - it deepens in redness. If you try to match colours of some other wood with cherry (even stained cherry) before it's colour has fully stabilized, you may find that you no longer have a match in a few years.

Also, most stains with red in them (eg cherry, mahogany, etc) are susceptible (to varying degrees) to bleaching of the colour in sunlight. Make sure you use a UV protective top coat. Eg exterior polyurethanes tend to have more UV inhibitors. That said, depending on the finish sheen of your cabinets, you may be somewhat limited in terms of what looks "right"... polys can build up too much thickness. I prefer wipe on penetrating products to brush on for that reason (or one can thin, depending on the product).

I have not stained rubberwood, but it sounds like it is easy to work with. The only other caution is to verify that the grain is generally compatible with the grain of the wood in your cabs... it may look funny even if they are the same colour depending how picky you are.

Anyway, like No Snaab said, testing an inconspicuous spot is a good first step. I just wanted to pass along those other cautionary points as well. Good luck!
