I agree with Henri, the Bosch will work well. I had a 4" of essentially the same from bosch and it was great (though I eventually wrecked it and now I'm using a Makita which is even better). It makes a difference having 2 grips, front and back.
I have a separate polisher for the car, and they can be found very cheaply this time of year (at least up here as all the car washing/detailing stuff goes on sale because nobody does it in the freezing cold). I think I paid $20 for mine!
220 grit and higher for finish sanding. Higher grit is finer. Starting grit really depends on the existing level of finish of the surface. I usually finish by hand with 3m style wool pad (cleaner than steel wool).
Where you are finishing already built furniture, you may also benefit from something like a mouse to get in the corners... circularly shaped orbital sanders don't do corners very well!! I have a 1/4 sheet (square) makita orbital which I normally use for finish sanding as it is less aggressive than the orbitals that use circular pads, and it gets into many corners easily. Anything really tight needs to be done with a mouse or by hand.
