I agree with what Justin wrote. (The whole process is tough... I've been through it.)

One thing to think about: when the insurance company arrives at a value for the car, you should have examples of similar cars for sale, and prices. I'd go straight to the classifieds here and pick out any and all of the '06-'08 9-5s for sale. Show these values to the insurance company, and add taxes, registration, etc. to prove that you can't be "made whole" for the price they offer. (They might offer a very fair value, so knowing what is available at what price will inform your decision.)

I would deal directly with your dad's insurance company. They *should* be on your (his) side.
