I have rented 3 U-Haul trucks in the past 5 years. Two were fairly new, one old but no problems with any of them. Biggest problem was finding parking spaces at restaurants and motels. I averaged 10 to 12 mpg. If taking toll roads bring a lot of cash. Truck rates often 2X the car rate.
The lower load height of a U-Haul is a real advantage. As for driving just take it easy and keep checking the mirrors.
