I worked at the Mobil R&D laboratory in Paulsboro, NJ for a number of years back in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. I was there courtesy of DEC software services and worked on a variety of laboratory automation and data analysis projects, as well as sysadmin work. In the process I had a fair amount of contact with lubrication engineers there.

Basically what they told me was that if you change your oil at say 3K mile intervals it doesn't much matter what kind of oil you use as long as it meets the car manufacturer's specifications. The exception was turbocharged vehicles where the synthetic would resist high-temperature breakdown and coking that would take place with conventional oils. (Today there may be other considerations such as ZDDP levels for vintage flat-tappet engines.)

I use Mobil 1 in my turbocharged Saabs.
