I'm looking at a couple of different options.
2012 BMW X1 (before anyone says "that car doesn't exist", I am in Canada and yes it was here one year before it arrived in the US)
xdrive 8 speed auto, 240HP, like new condition, 100k miles ~$8600 (US)
2012 Mazdaspeed3, 6spd manual, 260HP, 104k miles, looks very good but has rebuilt title. Guy claims it was fairly minor damage. Comes with 1 year, third party warranty but that basically only covers the drive train. ~$6800
While the X1 is technically a compact SUV and the Speed3 is technically a hatchback, to me they both look like a truncated station wagon. The X1 definitely has a bigger cargo area, and it feels roomier despite having almost identical passenger compartment volume. Despite being the larger vehicle and an automatic, the X1 has a significant edge in fuel economy (according to the EPA, anyway). The Mazdaspeed3 felt much sportier, more reminiscent of my old Aero.
Any feedback is appreciated.
